Bardia National Park |
Surrounded by the wild landscape of Bardia National Park, close to the border with India, Karnali Lodge is a peaceful pocket of understated luxury.
Run by the inspiring Tiger Tops conservation initiative, and sister property to Tharu Lodge in Chitwan, Karnali Lodge has an impressive commitment to eco sustainability, as well as being part of the larger project to protect and monitor Nepal’s wildlife.
The guest accommodation comprises a dozen traditionally built rooms, and a further handful of higher-spec rooms with ensuite facilities and private balconies, all created using local materials and soft, neutral colours. Natural light gently illuminates each space, filtering through the surrounding trees and tall windows.
A restful atmosphere pervades, making this an ideal retreat for combining wildlife watching with time out in Nepal’s stunning wilderness. Take jeep safaris into the park, or explore on foot, accompanied by experience guides who can help you spot leopards (excuse the pun!), elephants, birds and, of course, tigers. You can even take a boat trip down the Karnali river to find wildlife on the water.
Back at the lodge, enjoy candlelit dinners created from locally sourced ingredients, and those grown on their own organic farm, wander through the secluded gardens, curl up in a cosy corner with a good book, and keep warm around the firepit as you do a little stargazing.
We SayIn the heart of one of the world’s best tiger-spotting locations, this lodge is well off the tourist trail and well worth the effort.
