Bandipur | Standard
Behind a terracotta-coloured façade on Bandipur’s sleepy main street, a cosy collection of rooms surrounds a peaceful courtyard at the Gaun Ghar hotel. A classic example of the Newari architecture which has been beautifully preserved throughout Bandipur, this simple, mid-terrace hotel has a heritage layout that gives each space its own individuality and character.
The building’s original decor has been preserved and restored throughout creating a traditional style. Brick walls have either been left bare or painted in warm, neutral tones to compliment the pale wooden furniture, woven mats, exposed beams and polished floorboards. Dark shutters keep the rooms cool during the hottest parts of day, then fold back to let natural light flood in. In the evenings, pierced copper-coloured lamps diffuse a warm glow throughout the space and bring in a touch of contemporary design. The en-suites are simple and in keeping with the heritage concept.
The rooms at the front of the hotel overlook tubs of bright flowers in the charming pedestrianised street below, but the rooms at the back have arguably the best views, stretching over the green hills towards the Himalayas.
Enjoy a range of dishes in the restaurant, including international standards and Newari specialities, skillfully prepared using local ingredients. Sit in the rustic dining room, surrounded by traditionally carved beams with an opening onto the sunny courtyard, or on the quiet garden terrace at the rear. The terrace is the hotel’s pièce de résistance; the perfect spot to settle back and sip something cool, gazing across the tumbling landscaped gardens towards the mountain skyline, as the sun sets behind the snow-capped peaks.
We SayA cosy boutique, full of character and history, with fantastic views from the terrace.
