Yangon (Rangoon) | Deluxe
Built in 1901, and considered to be the earliest hotel in Yangon, The Strand Hotel is undoubtedly one of Yangon’s most iconic landmarks. It’s so impressive they even named the street after it. The Colonial-era architecture is as grand as it is impressive and once you walk through the heavy teak front doors, you’ll be carried back to the world of George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling.
A major renovation project took place during 2016, which saw the hotel close for six months, but the changes made were subtle, tasteful and respectful to the hotel’s heritage. Marble floors have been restored, wooden furniture has been polished and the suites have been given a spruce up with new furnishings, fresh fabrics and mod-cons aplenty.
The impressive reception hall, overlooked by two further storeys of teak landings, leads to the timeless Sarkie’s Bar, the Strand Café - serving high tea daily, of course - and the elegant Strand Restaurant which is one of the hottest gastronomic experiences in Yangon.
Moving upstairs, each spacious suite is everything you expect and perhaps more, with the building’s Colonial heritage expertly presented and combined with modern amenities. The Strand’s team of dedicated butlers are on hand to attend to your every whim.
November 2017 saw the finishing touches to the hotel’s major overhaul, and arguably the most eagerly awaited: the opening of a large outdoor pool. In a new area behind the original 1901 building, in keeping with the hotel’s standard and style, the pool is surrounded by loungers, elegant cabanas and a teak decking area for al fresco dining. Two spa therapy rooms and a well-equipped gym complete the new facilities and have propelled the property into a new league of luxury.
We SayThe hotel closed for six months during 2016 for arguably much-needed renovation works. But it’s back and better than ever before: now a genuine contender for best deluxe property in town.
