Arakan Nature Lodge
Zikhone | Other
This remarkable community-focused eco-lodge is situated by a beautiful beach in Rakhine State.
The accommodation is built from recycled ironwood and other materials sourced from disused houses in the area. Design choices are deliberately minimal, and make the most of locally growing natural materials and local building methods appropriate for the climate.
Some elements, such as the palm-thatched roofs, need to be replaced regularly, but this provides sustainable income for the previously impoverished community. The result is a tiny handful of beautiful wooden structures set amongst palm trees, next to one of Myanmar’s loveliest beaches.
Interiors are airy but comfortably shaded, with wooden furniture, woven mats and a low key grace which encourages laid-back relaxation. Every room and house has its own outdoor space, as well as an open air bathroom area and a comfortable luxury composting loo.
In the restaurant, dine on fresh local seafood cooked to traditional recipes, and delicious vegetarian options. Guests are invited to join in the cooking and have fun in the open kitchen, baking your own bread in the outdoor clay oven and even putting together your own meals if you wish to.
Locally made food products are bought from the village, and staff are all locals who’ve been trained by the owners, who have many years experience in the hotel industry. The lodge is run along true eco-lodge principles: it’s 100% solar powered 24 hours a day, and all kitchen and laundry greywater is recycled through a wastewater garden to be reused for irrigation.
We SayRelax by a gorgeous beach while genuinely contributing to local wellbeing in one of Myanmar’s poorest regions.
