Takayama | Ryokan
Tucked away in a forest setting on the banks of the Miagawa River just outside Takayama, Wanosato is a haven of tranquillity, where the fresh mountain air, deliciously healthy food and ‘Omotenashi’ are conducive to maximum relaxation and rejuvenation.
There’s an air of heritage about this rustic ryokan: its thatched-roof, earthen-walled buildings constructed from natural materials are reminiscent of traditional rural homes. Step inside and tatami-floors, low level furniture and comfortable futons are complemented by Japanese art. Large windows in most of the rooms overlook the scenic surrounds.
River views can also be enjoyed from the first floor dining room where a menu of locally sourced food showcases sansei (mountain vegetables), freshly caught wasakana (river fish) and Hida Beef – the highest grade of beef in the region. After dinner, locally distilled sake can be sampled around the flames of the large raised hearth that takes centre stage downstairs.
We SayA traditional property with plenty of character.
