Sapporo Grand Hotel

Sapporo | Superior

Conveniently located in central Sapporo, connected to the JR Sapporo Station via an underground walkway, the Sapporo Grand was the first European-style hotel to open in the city back in 1934 and has grown to just over 500 rooms.

Split over three buildings there’s a rather baffling choice of room categories, but all are reasonably sized (in Japan hotel terms) and feature all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. Essentially, the rooms in the Annex building are compact, simple and unfussy; the Main building is more classic in style with a cosier vibe; and the East building rooms are contemporary and spacious. There are dedicated Family rooms, as well as connecting rooms for those holidaying with kids. If you’re intrigued to sample the low Japanese style bedding but reluctant to abandon western comforts then book one of the ‘Japanese Living’ rooms. And if it’s luxury and space you’re after, opt for a room on the ‘Grand in Grand’ floor in the Main building, that benefits from exclusive access to the Executive Lounge – the Super Suites are particularly special.

Dining and drinking options within the hotel are equally varied. Across the restaurants you can enjoy western, Chinese and Japanese cuisine; not forgetting the Big Jug which specialises in locally sourced produce and Hokkaido beer. Alternatively, sample Japanese whisky in the Caravel Bar, or cocktails and jazz at the Old Saloon 1934.
