Ryokan Tsutsui

Setoda | Ryokan

This welcoming ryokan offers traditional Japanese hospitality in a plum location on Ikuchijima, one of six islands in the Seto Inland Sea linked by the Shimanami Kaido road and cycling route.

Though the décor is a tiny bit dated, the atmosphere is friendly and warm, and guest rooms are clean, neat and spacious. Some have lovely views over the Seto Inland Sea and ferry port, and give you a front row seat for sunsets. They have tatami matting and staff pop in each evening to lay out the futon beds.

The traditional Japanese breakfasts are a delicious highlight of any stay at this ryokan. Alongside coffee, juice and toast, you can feast on rice, fish cooked on your table’s hibachi grill, pickles, tofu and miso soup. Dinners are equally abundant multi-course affairs, showcasing regional ingredients and specialities.

The ryokan sits roughly mid-way along the Shimanami Kaido, close to temples and beaches. After a day on your feet or in the saddle, its indoor onsen is a good place to relax, with views over Seto Inland Sea and fresh lemon slices in the water giving it a citrus freshness.

We Say

A friendly inn with a pleasant port-side location and superb Japanese food.
