Winter wonderland

“Visiting Japan in the run-up to Christmas, or in the early part of the year, can be so rewarding, with fewer crowds and absolutely beautiful landscapes to enjoy”

Why visit Japan in winter?

a plate of seafood on a table

Visiting Japan in winter is a surefire way to see the country in a brilliant light, with fewer crowds in the top spots, the best seasonal seafood, and (if you time your booking right) the widest choice of accommodation and experiences at excellent value.

Alongside the idyllic snowscapes and cosy winter onsen soaks, visiting Japan in winter is, in many ways, business as usual. Enjoy the neon intensity of Tokyo, find the finest foodie treats in Osaka, and experience traditional Japanese culture from Kyoto to Kanazawa, but with lower footfall. Pack your big coat for chilly days, but rest assured that rain and snow won’t stop play – those shinkansen will run on time!

When to visit Japan in winter?

a man walking in the snow

From the beginning of December, those clear, blue-sky winter skies that signal biting cold days begin to take hold, and there’s plenty of pre-Chrismas sparkle to make you feel festive. January is the optimal time to catch Japan in the snow, enjoy plenty of onsen soaks and warm sake, and even try out a little skiing, if that’s your thing.

You’ll find plenty of crisp, sunny days, interspersed with rainy ones, and even snow, right through to the end of February, when winter starts gives way to spring and hanami, or cherry blossom season. Whilst visiting Japan during hanami has become extremely busy, visiting Japan in late February can give you an early glimpse of those beautiful pink-and-white blooms with far fewer crowds to contend with.

Frozen north...

Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost (and coldest) island, really comes into its own during the winter. The fact its capital, Sapporo, once hosted the winter Olympics gives you an idea of the set-up – plenty of the white stuff, mountainous terrain, and an infrastructure designed to keep going through any weather.

It can get busy during the Sapporo Snow Festival each February, which sees the city’s parks transformed into galleries exhibiting enormous snow and ice sculptures, and between November and March you’ll be treated to the Sapporo White Illuminations – a city-wide festival of lights and market stalls, but outside of the city limits you’ll find plenty of tranquil winter wonderland.

Winter is crab season in Japan, and Nijo seafood market will have plenty of shellfish on offer, which you can wash down with a beer from Sapporo’s other famous industry – the Asahi breweries.

Hot spring bliss

a hot spring with steam coming out of it

Japan’s onsen culture is well-known, and alongside the fairly strict guidelines and traditions of the public baths, many ryokan offer delightful private onsen and small-scale baths that are perfect for cosying up after a bracing day’s winter exploring.

Picture the scene: snow covers the ground, the air has a firm chill, and everyone is wrapped up against the cold. But in your ryokan, sheltered away from the winter weather, you gently settle into your blissfully hot mineral bath and let the aches and stresses melt away…

City lights

a street with trees with lights on it

Japan’s big cities literally shine during the winter, with thousands of twinkling lights adorning the streets. Tokyo is a top destination at any time of year, but during the winter it has a few extras to offer. The Christmas light displays are particularly noteworthy around the station, the Odaiba Rainbow Fireworks can be seen above the city every Saturday in December, and for the young (and young at heart!) Tokyo Disneyland’s Christmas extravaganza is as sugary and over-the-top as you’d hope.

Osaka is a foodies’ paradise all year round, and during winter there are plenty of street food snacks and eateries serving hearty hot-pots to warm you up. There’s always plenty of Christmassy glitz here too, so if you’re not feeling festive before you visit, you soon will be!

Wildlife watching

Thanks to continued conservation efforts, the iconic Red Crane (which was thought to be extinct until around 90 years ago) has made a recovery, and these birds are now thriving in the woodlands and marshes of Hokkaido’s Kushiro-shitsugen National Park.

Though they can be seen all year round, during the winter they perform an extraordinary ‘dance’ in the snow, which is quite something to see. The cranes are one of many species which draw bird-watchers to the park and even during the winter the paths are easily navigated thanks to the relatively light snowfall in this area, making it more accessible to less-intrepid trekkers.

Into the hills...

a house covered in snow

For a Honshu experience with a bit of a winter wilderness feel, there are several spots in the Japanese Alps where you can get away from the crowds and enjoy the uncanny silence of pristine snow.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the name of the region, there is a distinct ‘Swiss chalet’ aesthetic to the exterior of many hotels in places like Takayama and  Kanazawa, but inside you will find the distinctly Japanese delights of a hot onsen and local cuisine. Some ryokan here even feature sunken fireplaces in the rooms for extra cosiness.

Skiing in Japan

Those who discover Japan’s ski slopes often find a kind of winter sports nirvana. From northern Hokkaido’s white peaks to the chic, easily accessed Hakuba Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japan offers excellent snow, immaculately groomed runs and terrain to suit everyone from total beginners to seasoned slalom experts.

What sets skiing in Japan apart, however, is not just the quality of the powder – though that alone draws skiers from Canada, Switzerland and France – but the culture that surrounds it. Days on the mountain are followed by bowls of steaming ramen, evenings in traditional inns, and long, restorative soaks in onsen. It’s a combination that feels uniquely Japanese: exhilarating, comforting and quietly indulgent.

Fantastic holiday

Using Selective Asia took all the stress out of booking and organising the trip ourselves as we were travelling around the country. Selective Asia were really responsive to our needs and created our perfect honeymoon holiday. They were available whenever we had questions or needed some help. I would highly recommend using their service!

Another fantastic trip with Selective Asia

We’ve been on 5 trips to the Far East with Selective Asia over 17 years with the same consultant (Lionel). They take the time to tailor the holiday individually with invaluable local knowledge and once again got it spot on. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Highly Recommend Selective Asia

Have been to Asia with Selective Asia twice now, and we can't fault them. We had the most amazing holiday staying in 6 different locations throughout Thailand. Selective Asia did us proud by giving us a well thought out itinerary. The accommodations were first class. Our private guide called James was very knowledgable and made our holiday very memorable.

Our trip to Japan was outstanding

We had had several discussions with Andrew, our agent, before booking the trip and he incorporated all the activities we were interested in plus recommending other activities that he knew we would be interested in. Much of our trip was self guided and SA provide an excellent app to help with this. It was intuitive, easy to use and had the option to be able to contact someone locally if necessary. The whole trip was seamless and managed at a thoroughly professional yet friendly level. I would travel with this company again (we have travelled with them before.)

Heather, Japan

It was amazing from start to finish. Really informative when we were planning the trip, flexible about our itinerary, offering a range of options but all backed with knowledge of the lodges and reserves. The support when we were away was excellent with alternative arrangements made quickly when a flight was cancelled and great advice when our return flight seats were changed. We would absolutely recommend the company, particularly if you are looking for something a little different but special.
