Munnar | First Class
Step back into the history of an old-style cardamom plantation at this family run retreat just outside Munnar.
The ethos of the Windermere Estate - so named because of the area’s similarities to the lake district - is about making the most of what nature has already provided, to give guests a homely and personal experience.
Its chalet-style rooms have been built organically over time, so each one is slightly different. What they all share, however, is the sense of a rustic country hideaway.
Interiors have crisp, airy, high-beamed ceilings and sturdy locally-crafted furniture, and tiled bathrooms that are smart and functional. The grey stone walls sit against deep terracotta tiles and soft, hand-embroidered linen.
The harmonious ethos extends to the design of the buildings and garden, which follow the existing rock formations, and the restaurant’s daily menu, which changes depending on what ingredients are available.
The food, served in the sun-drenched barn, comes from the local markets or the estate’s own garden. There’s also a classic Keralan tea shack where you can stop for a quick cuppa, and a well-stocked library where you can relax with a good book.
Twice a week, guests are invited to follow torches up to a communal barbecue at a vantage point which overlooks the estate and its surroundings.
The garden, which attracts a host of birds and butterflies, offers a natural setting for the outdoor pool, and boasts a mix of the plantation’s original guava and peach trees, coffee and gooseberry bushes.
In addition to getting a taste of plantation living, guests have exclusive access to the estate, where you hike or simply stroll and absorb the spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
We SaySoak up the spices as you step back in time.
