Experience Tokyo with a student guide
The exclusive Selective Asia student host experience will enable you to see a side of Tokyo not experienced by most, and spend time discovering what life is like in this extraordinary city from a genuine local person.
What to expect from your student guide...
This is not your average guided afternoon, but more a chance to meet with a Japanese student who is learning English as a foreign language, for a few hours of cultural exchange. We have partnered with a language school in Tokyo to offer this unique opportunity.
This entirely bespoke time will be guided by your interests and those of your student host on the day. Typically, your student host will take you for a coffee (or a beer, if you fancy!) in the area you are staying in, to find out more about your interests and for you to learn about theirs.
Together you can then decide on how best to spend your time together – this may be going for a walk around a part of Tokyo you may not see otherwise, visiting an art gallery, enjoying a local market, or seeing some sites you may not have had the chance to see already.
Your student host will also happily join you for an informal meal at the end of your time together if you are all hungry, and they can suggest some local ramen shops or Izakayas (Japanese pubs) to sample.
Your host will meet you at your hotel or an alternative agreed meeting point – they will be holding a sign with ‘Selective Asia’ printed on it. The experience may not finish back at your hotel, but your host can give you directions on how to get back.
Please note the students are not qualified guides, and their level of English will vary – this is as much of an opportunity for them to learn about your culture, and practise their English, as it is for you to learn about theirs.
As the experience is flexible, all costs will need to be paid locally. Please be aware you will need to pay for any food, drink, transport and entrance fees on this experience. We would recommend that is a nice gesture to also cover the student's costs, but this is by no means expected by the students. The practice of gift giving in Japan is common, so you may like to bring a small gift from your home country – this could be a fridge magnet, some local food, a postcard so they can see where you live. This is a simple token and again is not expected.
