** As of 12th March 2020, the Government of Sri Lanka has temporarily suspended the on arrival visa facilities for foreigners until further notice. Anyone arriving in Sri Lanka from the UK and a number of other countries since 16th March will either be refused entry or placed into military supervised quarantine for 14 days. No new visas are being issued to British nationals. ** 

Is an entry visa required for Sri Lanka?

Yes. All foreign nationals (excluding Singapore & the Maldives) require a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority to visit Sri Lanka.

** Tourists from 48 countries (including UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand & most European countries) who travel to Sri Lanka between 26 February and 30 April 2020 are entitled to a FREE tourist visa for a maximum 30 day stay. You will still need to either apply for your ETA online or queue at the airport, but there will be no fee. **

Can the visa be arranged on arrival?

Yes, although it advisable to arrange it in advance. 

If you are arriving in Sri Lanka by air, you can obtain your Electronic Travel Authority in advance of your departure with the easy-to-use online visa service (please see below). Alternatively most nationalities can obtain their visa on arrival at Colombo Airport.

What is required to arrange the visa?

  • Online Electronic Travel Authority service: $35USD payment to be made by credit or debit card.
  • Upon arrival at Colombo Airport: $40 to be paid in good condition USD notes and an up-to-date passport photo of a good likeness. The visa is free for children under the age of 12.

How long is a visa valid for?

The standard tourist visa is a single entry visa that allows you to travel in Sri Lanka for 30 days from the date of your proposed entry.

The Electronic Travel Authority explained:

You should apply for your Electronic Travel Authority in advance of travelling to Sri Lanka. The visa is valid for three months from the date of issue and for a maximum stay of 30 days. The online system is simple to use and will save time queuing at the airport after a long flight.
