Myanmar (Burma) visa information

**As of 19th March 2020, Myanmar closed all land borders with its neighbouring countries to foreigners. Any foreign national with a valid entry visa may only enter and exit Myanmar at Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw International Airports.**

Is an entry visa required for Myanmar (Burma)?

Yes. Everyone requires a visa to visit Myanmar (Burma). There are two types of entry visa: the e-visa service, which can be arranged online if arriving into Myanmar at Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw international airports, and  the package tour visa (EVT), which can be obtained at the Myanmar Embassy in London and at other embassies worldwide.

If you are arriving in Cambodia at a land border you must obtain your visa at your arrival point. The cost is $30 plus approximately $5 - $15 'stamping fee' (fee depends on the official's mood on the day!).

How long is a visa valid for?

The standard tourist visa is a single entry visa that allows you to travel in Myanmar for 28 days from the date of your proposed entry. You must only obtain your visa once you are within 3 months of your return date from Myanmar as the visa expires 3 months after being stamped into your passport.

Which type of visa should I get?

When entitled, by far the simplest way of obtaining your visa in advance is through the e-visa service.

E-visa

If you are arriving by air into one of Myanmar's three international airports (Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw) or by land (at Tachileik / Mae Sai,  Myawaddy / Mae Sot and Kawthaung / Ranong) we recommend you use the e-visa service.

It is a very easy to use system and your visa authorisation letter will be emailed to you approximately one week after application. You must travel with this letter as without it you will be unable to even board your flight into Myanmar. For further details please visit the Myanmar Immigration Department website.

EVT Visa

Alternatively, if you are arriving by a land at any other location or sea border then you ideally want to use the package tour visa (EVT). We will provide you with the necessary EVT letter to obtain your visa.

The standard visa is issued within 5 working days, ideally leave at least 4 weeks to avoid any problems, especially if you are posting your passport to the embassy or they are returning it by post. In each case be sure to use special/recorded delivery rather than standard post.

Please advise us if you wish to obtain your visa this way so that we can provide you with your EVT letter ahead of you visiting the embassy or posting your application.

Visa on arrival

From 01 October 2019, Myanmar will offer a visa on arrival service to citizens of Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and Australia. Passport holders of these countries will be able to fly into Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw without having to apply for a visa online prior to travel. The USD50 fee will still apply.

Whilst this is an exciting development, for peace of mind we would recommend obtaining your visa in advance of travel.

How much does it cost & what is required?

The visa costs £35, you can pay cash or postal order payable to Myanmar Embassy. A pre-paid special delivery return envelope must also be provided for postal applications.

You must complete the visa application form and provide 2 up-to-date passport photos. To obtain the package tour visa you will also require an EVT letter from us. This will be provided approximately two months before your departure.
