Community Ecotourism in Cambodia’s Cardamom Rainforest

The Cardamom Mountains habitat has been preserved to an extent rarely found elsewhere. The result? Excellent community-based ecotourism that offers true hope for the future of this rare expanse of unspoilt green.

Scientists spent the early 21st century documenting the region’s elephants, bears, tropical birds, butterflies, and hundreds of previously unknown insects, all of them dependent on the Cardamom habitat. Tucked away in Cambodia’s southwest, the Cardamom Mountains are one of the most biodiverse and least developed regions in Southeast Asia. Community-based ecotourism here is the real deal — not just tree-planting and photo ops, but immersive stays that genuinely support conservation and livelihoods.

Spending time in the Cardamom Mountains

This vast rainforest is home to countless bird, insect and mammal species, many of which were only recently documented. But don’t expect wildlife shows — here, your presence is designed to benefit the forest, not to interrupt it. You may hear an elephant in the distance or spot rare birds in the canopy, but the most powerful moments come from sharing food, stories, and adventures with the people who live in the forest.

What can you expect?

Each journey that includes Time with these insipring projects will have its own distinct shape, but certain aspects run through them all. Stay in locally-run homestays and ethical eco lodges that directly benefit local communities, head out on jungle hikes guided by ex-poachers turned conservationists, and swim in wild waterfalls, spotting animal tracks as you wander along on forest trails. Get involved with local life in Kmer cookery classes culminating in village meals.

If you’re feeling more energetic, take cycling tours through the surrounding landscape, and for an extra touch of a different kind of luxury, treat yourself to a stay at the extraordinary Shinta Mani Wild for a balance of comfort and conscience.

Chi Phat: A Model for Forest Ecotourism

Chi Phat village, in collaboration with Wildlife Alliance, is a flagship for sustainable tourism in Cambodia. Many in the region once earned a living through poaching or illegal logging, but have now created a sustainable economic model based on forest treks, homestays, cycling adventures and canoe trips. A stay here helps fund reforestation and protect the surrounding jungle.

Guided Jungle Hikes

Join a local guide on foot through the rainforest to reach a hidden waterfall. Cool off in natural pools, listen for birdsong and insects, and discover native plants that have sustained life here for generations. These treks offer fascinating insight into how conservation is reshaping the future.

Habitat First

Don’t get too excited about the idea of adding in an elephant-spotting safari, though – a trip to the Cardamoms is very much about leaving the wild animals to do their thing while you support their habitats by visiting community-based tourism projects. The Cardamom rainforest is, happily, still big enough for animals to disappear in it, so there’s no guarantee you’ll even catch a glimpse of them.

Local Women Leading the Way

Ecotourism in the Cardamoms is helping shift gender roles, too. In Chi Phat, local women have trained as guides, chefs and hosts, leading cycling tours, running cooking classes and welcoming visitors into their homes. Their innovation has been key to ensuring that tourism in the Cardamoms is inclusive and empowering.

Sustainable Luxury at Shinta Mani Wild

If you’re eager to experience a few nights of indulgent forest seclusion, consider ending your Cardamoms adventure at Shinta Mani Wild. This ultra-luxe tented camp blends conservation with design-led comfort, offering zipline access, riverside dining and guided patrols with anti-poaching rangers.

Brilliant! Selective Asia covered every detail.

Travel, hotels, guides, and excursions all flawlessly executed. Selective Asia listened to our requirements and worked with us to refine a great holiday.

Tim Goodman, Thailand

Holiday of a lifetime

The planning of the holiday and the ongoing support was excellent. The organisation on the ground when we got there was perfect and the local guides were knowledgeable and very personable. We would definitely go with Selective Asia again.

Gillian Baker, Komodo & Borneo

Selective Asia is more than a booking agency...

When a museum sent its exhibits overseas on tour, they learned about this before our departure and steered another to another site. When a hotel that we had booked scheduled a noisy wedding for the period of our occupancy, they were able to identify a fantastic hotel without noise before our arrival. I am not sure that any other tour operator would provide such detail in follow up, even after the tour was booked and paid for.

David Kosh, Vietnam

Our trip was outstanding...

We had had several discussions with Andrew before booking the trip and he incorporated all the activities we were interested in, plus recommending other activities that he knew we would be interested in. The whole trip was seamless and managed at a thoroughly professional yet friendly level. I would travel with this company again.

Heather, Japan

A great trip

We had an excellent holiday with an itinerary carefully arranged by Dave to suit our preferences. This is the third time we've travelled with Selective Asia and we will happily do so again in the future. We like the fact that they are a small company, passionate about what they do and committed to responsible travel.

Sarah Wilkie, Sri Lanka

A magical trip

Great planning and organisation, coupled with an amazing experience with the local guide and driver. Everything about the holiday was magical.
