For most, an overnight cruise aboard a traditional junk on the UNESCO protected waters of Halong Bay is an absolute must. And rightly so - it's an unforgettable experience.
Just three hours drive from Hanoi, the picturesque bay, a natural wonder of the world no less, is shrouded in myth. Local legend tells us how the gods sent a family of dragons to defend the country from the invading Chinese. The dragons spat out gemstones that turned into islands, linking together to create a wall against the enemy. The truth is almost as evocative as the legend and upon setting out into the bay you are met by one of the most beguiling natural scenes you will ever witness.
Day cruises are possible, although in our mind unadvisable; the limited cruise experience and lengthy return journey from Hanoi making it a very hectic day. More suitable are one or two night cruises, staying aboard a traditional junk, the same style that have sailed the bay for 100’s of years.
Throughout the day there will be plenty of opportunity to disembark on islands, hike to impressive view points and explore caves. Kayaking and swimming and sunbathing, in certain months, are also options. There is a large variety of junks to choose from, although we only work with first class and deluxe junks, which are subject to regular safety inspections. If the budget allows then a deluxe junk, such with the Paradise or Halong Jasmine, are preferred. Not only are they extremely luxurious, they also sail a course that takes you well away from the pack. Those that really want to discover solitude may well opt for a private junk, or one of the junks that visit the further lying Bai Tu Long Bay and Quan Lan Bay. Decisions decisions...
