On all Selective Asia journeys we use a great variety of transportation modes, often on a daily basis, each best suited to the demands of the terrain as well as to optimise your viewing, comfort and all round travel pleasure.
Please note - changes will sometimes need to be made to adapt to factors such as weather conditions, local shortages or breakdowns (many of the roads in Asia do not exactly ‘caress’ a vehicle!)
Car and Minibus
Spacious, modern and air conditioned vehicles are available in all regions. The make and model will depend on road conditions and the numbers of your party. If you are travelling in a large group there may be a need for more than one vehicle as some roads are not suitable for long wheelbases.
Boat
Travelling by water is always a favourite with our guests and often a welcome break from the (sometimes bumpy) grind of the roads. We use a variety of craft ranging from small, tender-sized boat for short crossings, to long-tail boats and more modern, speedy craft.
Train
Several of our itineraries include train journeys, several offering sleeper journeys with an overnight onboard.
On sleeper journeys, the standard of cabin class will depend on the standard of accommodation you opt for. All are comfortable air conditioned compartments as a minimum. With the luxury Victoria train service being used in some instances. Journeys are clearly marked on all itineraries.
Local taxi
From tuk-tuk to rickshaws, you will see and use a huge variety of local equivalents to the minicabs you are familiar with back home.
Flights
To save time, we occasionally build in an internal flight. This enables us to offer you a fuller itinerary with more stops of interest and significance. Often the distances and road quality between two points is such that this option becomes extremely worthwhile.
We will always arrange any internal/domestic flights for you. The flight price will always be marked as an additional cost with either a fixed cost or an indication of the amount (confirmed and paid for at the time of booking – this is due to day-to-day variation of some internal/domestic flight costs).
Mountain Bikes (Adventure Trips)
For our mountain biking programmes we have some of the best kit to be found in Asia:
Good quality lightweight Trek 4700 27speed Mountain bikes with Shimano Deore components, V Brakes and Rock Shock front suspension. We can offer a range of frame sizes from 13” to 23.5”. We also hire 24spd Challenger Sport Mountain bikes. When confirming a booking we recommend you provide your height to the operator so they can book the correct size well in advance.
An experienced bike guide, who is also a dab hand with the spanner, will lead the bike trip. He has intimate knowledge of the terrain and is also qualified to maintain and repair the bikes. All tools and spares will be provided. The support vehicle will transport these.
Please note - Your driver/helmsman will be happy to stop for photo breaks and other ‘necessities’ as and when you require them.
