Nong Khai is perhaps most famous as being the location of the well trodden, Australian/Japanese built ‘friendship bridge’ connecting Thailand and Laos.
However, this town is anything but a one trick pony. For the more adventurous it is an ideal base for visiting the lesser visited region of Issan - home to many sights and sounds that are completely unique to Thailand, you will often go days without seeing another farang (tourist!) whilst you share experiences with the most friendly Thai people you are likely to meet in Thailand. You will be welcomed into people’s home time-and-time again only to be given so much by people who can spare so little.
‘A highlight of any visit to Nong Khai is the temple of Wat Khaek. Featuring hundreds of Buddha images interwoven between trees and shrubs it creates a truly weird and wonderful scene. The more impressive statues stand over 30m tall and provides some incredible photo opportunities. An added bonus is you won’t be jostling with the type of crowds you find at Angkor Wat in Cambodia!
