Siem Reap has far more to offer than just a day or two exploring Angkor Wat, and is fast becoming one of South East Asia’s more popular light-adventure destinations. Horse-riding through rural Khmer villages, rice fields and deserted Angkor-era temples is one increasingly popular activity. A trek and camping safari at Koh Ker, one of the further outlying temples well away from the crowds, is perhaps amongst the most exciting few days one could spend in Cambodia; exploring deserted temples by torchlight with the aid of your guide before retiring to your camp.
Alternatively a helicopter or microlite flight over the Angkor Temples may not be to everyone’s taste, but neither is Fish Amok! However, for those who have the desire and a head for heights, the sites you will see spanning out below will never be forgotten.
Just an hour from the city is the Kulen Mountain, with great light trekking trails and a chance to incorporate a visit to the alternative, less visited River of 1000 Linga’s. Break the day with a few hours relaxing beside a dramatic waterfall - a popular spot with locals at the weekend and holidays, it’s also a great opportunity to understand the present day Khmer culture.
