Cape Weligama

Near Galle

Sister property to Tea Trails, Cape Weligama is one of Sri Lanka’s finest accommodation experiences. Superstar architect, Lek Bunnag, is the mastermind behind this superb resort which regularly features in exclusive travel and lifestyle publications. Designed to offer guests seclusion and privacy, the suites and villas are clustered around an epic headland. The rooms are majestic and range from expansive suites to huge freestanding villas with accompanying infinity pools.

The resort covers 12 acres and the spacious placement means that, depending on room type, you may not come across any other guests except when you go to the restaurant. Landscaped tropical gardens complete the cinematic location. The mesmeric views over the crashing Indian Ocean are best enjoyed from the famous crescent-shaped infinity pool that fills the point of the headland.

Location

This gorgeously elegant property is in a more-than-spectacular location overlooking the wild coast, just 30 minutes from Galle and even closer to Weligama.

Cape Weligama was, in a word, AMAZING! More than once have I remembered our sundowners on the Ocean Terrace.

Why we love it

Discover what to expect from staying at Cape Weligama

Coastal bliss

Who wouldn’t love staying atop a coastal headland with breathtaking views out over the Indian Ocean? The location is spectacular, but it isn’t even half the experience. The exquisite accommodation is chic, premium, comforting and full of convenience. The restaurant serves some of the best food of any Sri Lankan hotel. However, maybe the crowning glory is the utter professionalism of the staff. It should come as no surprise that the best chefs, concierges, and guest relations staff gravitate to properties like Cape Weligama. Friendly and always ready to chat with guests and educate people about their island, they make a great stay complete.

What can you do there?

The hotel is fairly isolated (though Galle is only 30 minutes away) and many people use their days here to wind down after a full itinerary exploring Sri Lanka’s culture and wildlife. There is an almost on-site adventure centre operated by the excellent Borderlands, where diving, kayaking and stand up boarding are all available with quality support and training.

The area is frequented by blue whales, and Borderlands have regular spotting tours that are a must. We ensure we only work with the most ethical wildlife experience providers, and Borderlands are top standard.

Community Focus

Like Tea Trails, Cape Weligama is owned by Dilmah Tea who have a long-standing relationship with local causes. Their MJF foundation is involved with a variety of projects across Sri Lanka to help both children and adults. There is a particular focus on directly benefiting the families of the tea estates, which can include medical care, scholarships for children and housing projects.
