Best visited between November and January, Preak Toal is just a few hours from Siem Reap but feels a million miles away. Initially your journey across the Tonlé Sap takes you via one of the most interesting stilted villages on the 'Great Lake' with the days programme being very dependent on the water level as the time required to reach the centre of the bio-sphere varies greatly throughout the year.
The journey to and from the platform, however, is very much a highlight and far from wasted time. Preak Toal makes for a spectacular day away from the temples and is guaranteed to entertain and impress the novice every bit as much as the expert twitcher. During our recent visit we were literally engulfed by birdlife such as Pelican, Painted Stork, Brahiminy kite, Grand Marabout, White Throated Kingfisher, Purple Swan Hen and Black Head Ibis.
