Tioman Islands: An Introduction
32km off Malaysia's east coast are the idyllic Tioman Islands, the resting place of a beautiful dragon-princess of Malay legend. Whilst flying from China to visit her prince in Singapore, this beautiful maiden stopped to seek solace in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea. Enraptured by the charms of the place, she decided to halt her journey and by taking the form of an island, she pledged to offer shelter and comfort to passing travellers.
Today the Tioman Islands boast options for every kind of passing traveller; families with children, honeymooners, scuba divers, backpackers, adventurers and even those looking for a slice of exclusivity and luxury. Most hotels are clustered around the villages dotted along the coastline, with only a few claiming private beach coves. The coral reefs around the islands are some of the finest found in Malaysia and the warm crystal clear waters make it perfect for both snorkelling and diving.
With the twin peaks of Batu Sirau and Nenek Semukut jutting dramatically up from the centre of the island the look is complete - deep green jungle ringed by white sands and brilliant blue seas, this is picture postcard stuff!
