The second-largest city in Laos, Savannakhet offers visitors a mixture of the old
and new; with the French colonial quarter sitting alongside a number of modern structures
that are starting to spring up thanks to the thriving economy driven by trade with
the nearby Thailand.
Not to miss in Suvannakhet is the impressive 15th century Buddhist stupa - Wat Sainyaphum
- along with the wonderful Catholic Church built by the French during colonial times.
Parts of the province of Savannakhet also formed part of the famous Ho Chi Minh
trail, a complex set of routes linking north and South Vietnam during the Vietnam
conflict. There is good cycling and trekking to be enjoyed in the region however
those in search of a challenging hill climb will be disappointed!
