Huay Xai: An Introduction
Sat on the banks of the Mekong River, Huay Xai faces across to Chiang Khong in Thailand. This is the northernmost border crossing between the two countries and is connected via ferry. Huay Xay is also the endpoint of national road no. 3 which will eventually connect China with Thailand via the border at Boten in Yunnan province and Luang Namtha in northern Laos.
Huay Xai has a domestic airport with irregular flights to Vientiane and Luang Prabang (depending on the season). Probably the most popular means of getting to/from here is by the boats that run down the Mekong to Pakbeng and Luang Prabang.
The gateway to Indochina
Why fly into Luang Prabang when you can travel by river, enjoying a stunning two day Mekong River cruise from Huay Xai. Likewise, the journey to Luang Namtha takes a fraction of the time it did just a few years ago thanks to improved roads and infrastructure.
