Shangri Lao Classic Explorer Camp Luxury Elephant Camp - Luang Prabang Back

More an experience than simply a lodge, the Shangri Lao Classic Explorer Camp has taken elephant trekking to an entirely different level in Laos, and across Indochina for that matter. Set on the banks of the banks Nam Khan River, 12 km from Luang Prabang, the camp is more akin to an African safari experience and your 'home' is a luxurious safari tent, complete with 4-poster bed, fixed wooden flooring and en suite facilities that include a bathtub or whirlpool.
There are in fact two camps, offering different but equally impressive views of the river and either the village of Ban Xieng Lom or across the Huay Khot Valley. Close by is the camp's restaurant, serving both a western and Lao al la carte menu. Now to the really good part; along with a sun terrace, spa pool & jacuzzi (in the jungle?!), there is the small matter of the other residents. Throughout your stay you will engage with the elephants and their mahouts in a wide of array of situations ranging from feeding, trekking and to joining in the fun at bath time. The experience can be as hands on as you please and there are a number of additional treks and village visits that you can make with the camps resident guides when not with the elephants. The camp's owners make considerable conservation efforts for which they should be congratulated, and they also provide much need employment to the local people who are involved with the camp in a variety of roles.

We Say
