Set in a pleasant garden on the edge of the old town, the Villa Maydou is a hidden gem consisting of five traditional style Lao houses. Two of the houses are registered under the protection of the UNESCO world heritage programme, having been wonderfully restored.
Rooms are well sized and finished in an uncluttered, traditional Lao style. Choose from a garden view in the original houses or overlooking the swimming pool in the newer buildings; the newer rooms additionally feature a television.
There is a charming covered outdoor restaurant that serves both traditional Lao specialities and French dishes - a nod to the French husband and Lao wife team who established the property. As well as a small saltwater swimming pool that, despite being a pond-green shade, is hugely appealing at the end of a day of touring.
The hotel's laid-back ambiance, the characterful accommodation and the genuinely welcoming Lao staff add to Villa Maydou's charm. It’s setting, next to a temple, is inspiring but be prepared for regular gong-ringing and general temple noise, which can be quite early in the morning!
