Perched on a hillside overlooking the Mekong River, the aptly named Mekong Riverside Lodge puts you in the perfect position to enjoy some quite breathtaking views. If you’re lucky, and up early, you might even see elephants bathing in the river.
There are only six rooms, set in traditional style bungalows made from solid teak, bamboo and rosewood. Each room provides simple, clean accommodation in a traditional style, with a large modern bathroom. The best feature without doubt is the private balcony: pull up a chair, grab a cold Beer Lao and watch the world float by along the river.
The lodge’s 'Khopchaideu' restaurant (which incidentally means 'thank you so much') is just across the road, and serves a selection of Laotian, Indian and western food. Take a torch, as the area tends to suffer from power cuts.
