Your Honeymoon in Laos

OK, we admit it, Laos isn’t the first destination that springs to mind when you’re planning a honeymoon. You wouldn’t be the first to venture forth, however, and you certainly wouldn’t be disappointed. Laos is one of the most exciting countries in South-East Asia to travel in right now, and it offers a unique experience unlikely to be found anywhere else in this part of the world.
Where to start
Luang Prabang is likely to be a high on your list of must-sees, so why not head to the wonderful UNESCO-protected town first—it offers the ideal location to unwind after the hectic build-up to your wedding. Having spent three or four days enjoying the sites and pace of Luang Prabang, you can either head north to the likes of Luang Namtha for some of Asia’s finest trekking or south to Vang Vieng (caving and kayaking) and Vientiane, the country’s laid-back capital city.
Further south, top of your list should be Si Phan Done, better known as ‘4,000 Islands’, where you will be amazed not only by its natural wealth but by the even more relaxed pace of life! There are several excellent properties that are adept at hosting honeymooners, ranging from the superb Kingfisher Eco Resort (elephant sightings guaranteed) to La Folie, on the opposite banks of the Mekong from Wat Phou in Champasak.
Selective Asia's Favourite Honeymoon Hotels
La Residence Phou Vao, Luang Prabang. The infinity pool with views across Luang Prabang says it all, but this luxury spa hotel has got so much going for it that it’s difficult to pick out its best features. Honeymooners will love its magical setting, exquisite rooms and the best spa in Luang Prabang.
La Folie Lodge, Don Daeng. On landlocked Laos, La Folie has a pretty unique location, lapped by the waters of the Mekong River. Situated on tiny Don Daeng island, in the middle of the Mekong, it’s the only hotel on the island, making it one of the most authentic hideaways in the region.
Kingfisher Eco Lodge, Phou Asa. Phou Asa is known as ‘elephant village’, and it’s not unusual to see them trumpeting their way through the surrounding countryside. Book a ‘comfort bungalow’ and enjoy a little eco luxury in one of the most tranquil spots in southern Laos.
The Boat Landing Guesthouse, Luang Namtha. An all time Selective Asia favourite, the Boat Landing is the premier eco lodge in Luang Namtha, with comfortably rustic rooms, a lovely, open veranda restaurant and an unbeatable atmosphere. It’s more down to earth than other properties in the area, but all the better for it.
Laos Perfect Honeymoon Beaches!?
Bit of a problem here; Laos is landlocked, creating a definite shortage of beaches! However, fear not, all is not lost. Firstly, there is always the option of including a stopover in Thailand, with its endless array of beaches, either en route or on your return. Alternatively, replace the beach with some equally sedate days spent unwinding amongst the unbelievably laidback 4,000 Islands in the south of Laos....and yes there are beaches on the banks of the Mekong River!
Where Else?
Laos can easily be coupled with a journey into Cambodia, crossing by land at Don Kralor or by flying to either Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. Alternatively, fly via Bangkok and enjoy one of the numerous Thai beaches that the country is famous for. For the really adventurous, there is a land route via Laos’ northeast in Vietnam via Mai Chau to Hanoi—not your typical honeymoon, but you make the rules.
