Where to start
Many honeymooners want a bit of beach at both the beginning and the end of their holiday. The best sands are, undoubtedly, in Sabah—start in Sarawak, where Damai beach isn’t a bad silver medal. Then head into the interior, perhaps to stay with the Iban people in Batang Ai or to explore the Mulu caves before crossing into Sabah. There’s trekking, caves, a multitude of wildlife (yes, we haven’t forgotten about the orange monkeys!) and several islands to consider. Finish up at the water bungalows on the dive island of Mabul or at one of two superb Shangri-Las close to Kota Kinabalu.

Borneo's Finest Honeymoon Beaches
The beaches in and around Kota Kinabalu are unquestionably the best in both Sabah and Sarawak. Several resorts lie close to the city, and there are also a number of islands that make up a National Park within easy reach. In Sarawak, just 30 minutes from Kuching, is Damai Beach, with a good stretch of sand and the very luxurious Damai Puri Resort. Most save Sabah for the end, only leaving the beach to board the flight home!
Where Else?
To a certain extent Borneo is a stand-alone honeymoon destination due to its remote proximity. However in most cases you will fly via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and it’s possible to add a stop in either city. You could also combine your stay in Borneo with a visit to one of the stunning Malay Peninsular islands.
