In certain years early and mid-May can remain relatively dry, however by the latter part of the month the rainy season is all but guaranteed to be under way across Cambodia. Temperatures remain high, however the rains help break the humidity making life a little more comfortable (avg temp: 29 °C). Avoid the short, heavy showers and you will find that this is a very pleasant month to be in Cambodia with one great benefit being the thinner crowds at the Angkor Temples.
Despite the start of the rain, May is a great month to visit all of Cambodia as plenty of sunshine is still expected and the visitor numbers are far lower than in previous months. The beaches on the south coast are still very much in consideration thanks to the short, infrequent showers.
During April and May you may witness the effects of 'slash and burn' farming, unfortunately practiced throughout much of Asia. New ground is cleared in February and, once dry, any wood and bush not required is burnt. Fires are lit across the country and particularly in rural regions this can create a hazy effect at times.
