On first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d jumped continent, to a little Northern European village in the woods. The Amara Mountain Resort is a cluster of beautiful timber-frame buildings, with 10 ample rooms set around a welcoming central lobby and restaurant, with a swimming pool and spa. Originally built in 1909 and carefully restored in 2002, each room is furnished using local wood, with airy neutral decor, comfy four-poster beds and lovely open fireplaces.
Surrounded by pine forests, with a pleasantly cool climate, the Amara is a wonderful place to take a breather from the high temperatures elsewhere in Burma. You can relax with a massage at its lovely Asian spa, enjoy local and European cuisine at its excellent restaurant, which sources ingredients fromt the Amara’s own vegetable garden, and wander on a guided walk through the nearby National Park, initiated and funded, rather splendidly, by the Amara’s own financial backers.
