’The cultural capital of Borneo&rsquo is how many think of Borneo, however
don’t expect another Luang Prabang! Kuching, capital of Sarawak, is a very
enjoyable city to visit for a few days, and there are direct flights out of Kuching
to most places of interest on the island.
Sitting on the banks of the Sarawak River, Kuching has a fascinating Colonial history.
The Britain James Brookes ruled here as late as 1946, and there is still much evidence
of this in the city. Today, Colonial architecture sits side-by-side with fascinating
Chinese temples and modern-day hotels.
Close to Kuching you can also visit the Semenggok Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre,
where you can see rescued orang-utans in 653 hectares of tropical rainforest. Whilst
not as well known as the Sepilok Sanctuary in Sabah, the centre undertakes essential
work in the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured orang-utans, often due to the
rapid deforestation prevalent in Borneo thanks to the oil palm plantations.
There are plenty of options to make donations towards the species welfare –
why not join Selective Asia in adopting an orphan? Visit www.orangutan-appeal.org.uk for more details.
Damai Beach
Just 30 minutes drive from Kuching is the beautiful Damai Beach. This quiet section
of coastline boasts great beaches and a world class hotel in the form of the Damai
Puri. Damai Beach is ideal for clients wishing to unwind at the beginning or end
of their stay in Borneo.
