Kinabatangan River: The Wildlife

The region is a real treat for primate enthusiasts with troops of macaques and proboscis monkey's seemingly at every turn. Lower in numbers but still residing in the basin area are orang-utans and gibbons.
For those with a keen eye there are also monitor lizards and a huge variety of insects, amphibians, reptiles and arachnids. In certain seasons, and with a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of an pygmy elephant or two, or even the extremely rare clouded leopard, which is known to reside in the region.
The area is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with regular sightings of a number of hornbills, magestic eagles and blue-banded kingfishers amongst many others.
