Officially known as the Danum Valley Conservation Area, this 438 sq km of protected
land is literally alive with unique wildlife of all shape and sizes.
With the logging and palm oil industries kept at bay, a series of lodge owners and
local operators work with organisations such as the WWF to help revive endangered
species.
The region is a paradise for nature lovers, enthusiasts and holidaymakers, and is
relatively easily accessible - some lodges are just a two-hour drive from the closest
airport. Stay for several days in a comfortable, educational lodge and you can enjoy
the isolation and simplistic beauty of the rainforest.
What’s to see?
Troops of macaques, orang-utans and gibbons in their natural environment, as well
as several species of elephant. If you’re extremely lucky you may get to spot
the rare clouded leopard or Sumatran rhino.
Enjoy treetop canopy walkways, exhilarating jungle treks and, for anyone brave enough,
night time nature treks. One of our favourite treks is the Coffin Cliff trail, passing
an ancient Kadazan Dusun burial site and several waterfalls - ideal for a much-needed
cooling off en route!
