Thailand provides a totally different experience. Sublime trekking, hill tribe villages, home stay experiences, majestic temples and an entirely different cuisine all await. Chiang Mai has a unique traditional charm and, due to its altitude, a cooler climate. Its multitude of temples make for great exploring & the night market, while perhaps a little 'trashier' than in times gone-by, provides some great haggling opportunities. The smaller city of Chiang Rai, close Myanmar, Laos and China's borders, has an excellent multicultural night market where traders sell wares from across Asia.
