Elephant trekking

Walk on the wild side

Whether it’s an hour, an afternoon or four days, camping out in remote villages along the way, time spent with these magnificent beasts is hard to top. The wild Asian elephant is a seriously endangered species, mainly due to hunting. In the past, the logging trade helped ensure the safety of many; now, touristy ventures are responsible for ensuring we don’t lose these incredible animals from Asia altogether. In our opinion, Laos offers the ultimate elephant experience; our favourite spots are in Hongsa, where Nick has spent four days trekking across the countryside with a small caravan of elephants, & Phou Asa, where you can spend the day learning to be a mahout.
